Adverbial Modifiers (Clauses)
นอกจากประธาน กริยา กรรม และส่วนขยาย (subjects, verbs, objects and complements) แล้ว ประโยคอาจจะประกอบด้วย modifiers ซึ่งเป็นคำหรือกลุ่มคำที่เราเพิ่มเข้าไปเพื่อขยายความหมายของคำหรือกลุ่มคำหลัก modifiers มีมากมายหลายแบบ การแบ่งประเภทของ modifiers ขึ้นอยู่กับหน้าที่ของมัน เช่น adjective modifiers ทำหน้าที่ขยาย nouns และ pronouns ส่วน adverbial modifiers ทำหน้าที่ขยาย verbs, adjectives และ adverbs หรือบางทีก็ขยายทั้งประโยค
Adverbial Modifiers มีทั้งแบบที่เป็น adverb ธรรมดา แบบที่เป็นวลีที่ประกอบด้วยคำ 2 คำขึ้นไป ไปจนถึงแบบที่เป็นอนุประโยคที่สมบูรณ์ (clauses)
ในที่นี้เราจะกล่าวถึง Adverbial Clauses ซึ่งมักใช้โดยมี conjunctions นำหน้า แต่บางทีก็สามารถสลับตำแหน่งกันได้

Time
- I shall do that when I have time.
- When I have time, I shall do that.

- When in doubt, consult the dictionary.
- She always sings while doing her work alone.
Duration
- I have done nothing since I came back.
- It has been raining ever since I came here.
- I shall wait here till he comes back.
- While there is life, there is hope.

- Don’t speak until spoken to.
Frequency
- That’s what I feel whenever I see him
- Every time I come here, he is away.
- She wears a new dress every time I see her.
- You may come as frequently as you like.
Place and Movement
- You may go where you like.
- We generally go where we can have good food at a reasonable price.
- Where there is a will, there is a way.
Distance
- I’ll go as far as I like.
- The thermometer has gone up to where it was yesterday.
Manner
- Everything is left as it was when he died.
- Everybody feels exactly as you do.
- He did it as if he liked it.
- Why didn’t you do it the way I told you to?

- She hurriedly left the room as though angry.
- He looked round, as if in search of something.
Comparison (Equality)
อนุประโยคแบบเปรียบเทียบแบบนี้มักเป็น elliptical ซึ่งบางส่วนที่ซ้ำกับใจความในประโยคหลักจะถูกละไว้

Comparison (Superiority)
- This room is larger than that one (is).
- I have done more work than you (have done).
- I stayed there longer than I planned (to stay).
ในบางครั้งอนุประโยคก็ไม่มีประธานและกรรมในกรณีนี้ conjunction “than” จะใช้เสมือน relative pronoun
- He eats more than is good for him.
- That’s more than I can say.
Proportion
- The longer you stay, the better you will like it.
- The more he reads, the less he understands.
- One becomes wiser as one grows older .
Cause and Reason
- I took it because I wanted it.
- Since I am here, I had better stay.
Purpose
- I put it here so that he can see it when he comes.
- He raised his hat in order that the bus might stop.
- He wrote down the number for fear he should forget it.
Result
- I was so tired (that) I went to bed at once.
- It’s so hot (that) I can’t sleep.
Condition and Supposition
- If you see John, tell him I want him.
- Suppose (or Supposing) I see him, what shall I tell him?
- I’ll come provided (or providing) you let me know in good time.
- You can take it now on condition you bring it back tomorrow.
ประโยค conditional ที่เป็นแบบ abbreviated
- Come tomorrow, if possible.
- If in need, don’t hesitate to ask me for money.
- The child is never peevish unless ill.
ยังมีการใช้ประโยค conditional อีกแบบในภาษาวรรณกรรม มักไม่มี conjunction เชื่อมและมีการเรียงลำดับคำแบบเฉพาะ ประโยคแบบนี้ใช้กับพวก imaginative clauses หรือสมมุติฐานที่ไม่เป็นจริง และส่วนใหญ่ใช้กับ had, were, should
- Had he kept his promise, there would not have been all this trouble.
- Were I to do it over again, I would still do it the same way.
- I would go even to Africa for her sake, should it be necessary.
Concession ประโยคที่ทำหน้าที่ขยายกริยาหรือขยายคำคุณศัพท์เพื่อแสดงการยอมรับ
- Though I went to bed so late last night, I got up early this morning.
- Inexperienced as (or though) I was, I knew he was not a man to be trusted.
- Even if it’s true, it doesn’t (or won’t) make any difference.
- While she is not exactly beautiful, the girl has great charm.
หรือแบบย่อ
- Though cold, it was a fine morning.
- The boy, although no older than thirteen or fourteen, fought and beat him.
Indifference เป็นประโยค concession แบบหนึ่ง
- No matter what (or Whatever ) he may say, don’t you believe it.
- No matter how hard you may try, you won’t get it.
- Whether you go or not, I am not going.
หรือแบบย่อ
- Write something, no matter what .
- He was always out of doors before six, whatever the weather.
หรืออาจอยู่ในรูป imperative clause
- Go where you will , you are sure to find people who speak English.
- Laugh as much as they like , I shall stick to my plan.
